An Omani author has created history by being the first Arabic-language writer to win one of the biggest literary fiction awards in the world – the Man Booker International Prize for 2019.

Celestial Bodies , written by Jokha  Al Harthi, translated by Marilyn Booth from Arabic and published by Sandstone Press, was announced on Tuesday as the winner of the Man Booker International Prize 2019 in London. The £50,000 prize, which celebrates the finest works of translated fiction from around the world, is divided equally between its author and translator. “I am thrilled that a window has been opened to the rich Arabic culture,” Jokha said after the ceremony at the Roundhouse in London.
Celestial Bodies , translated from the original Omani novel Sayyidat al-Qamar , was among the six books shortlisted for the prize. This year’s Man Booker International Prize shortlist featured six books translated from five languages, hailing from five countries and three continents, but only one male writer alongside five female authors and an all-female list of translators.

My Further Notes –

I have been struggling for a number of years to have my books recognised and acknowledged.

Al Hamdu Lillah My Arab Management Book Psychology of Arab Management Thinking was awarded Gold Seal of Literary Excellence by The USA Review of Books in 2014.

Oman shows high potential of Writers and Authors and if anything this award just proves the point including even my book from 2014 even

We need really far more support and cooperation from Local and GCC Books Stockists in displaying our books – which sadly is very much lacking to be factual!

Maybe things will start to change now slowly showing Omanis have won International Awards in Writing books including in English.

Because even The USA Publishers of my books are shocked to find lack of support acknowledgement and recognition of our books.

Today if you go in The Internet and search for “Majid Al Suleimany” you will find all my books.

But locally in Oman it is very far lacking in such aspects!

I am very pleased to hear this good news. This is a high point for Omani authors, writers and columnists. It is great that our works are being recognised and acknowledged and appreciated.

The award is a plus point for us Arab writers especially who write in English to be heard internationally.

This is like a Ramadan gift to Oman. I give her my best regards and compliments and I congratulate her from the bottom of my heart. We are all happy! For us all , her and The Nation!
